In the Eastern Orthodox church it is customary to give the bride and groom a pair of icons, Christ Pantocrator and the Theotokos (Mother of God). The icons are a tangible witness to their vows before God and form the basis of the family's prayer corner.
This diptych is my own slightly Italianate interpretation of the Wedding Icons, the hand-gilded and embellished frame and the cosmic background of stars inspired by an old Florentine frame I spied in an antique shop.
