Advent is taken very seriously here in Austria I find, though it seems to be more frolic than fasting: St Nicholas and Krampus parades, gluhwein and sausages, choirs and brass bands in the snow, magical Christmas markets with cosy crafts and homemade specialities. The Millstaetter Buergerinnen, a worthy group of ladies who appear at civic and church events in traditional long silk dresses and gold-embroidered bonnets, asked me to take part in their Advent Market in the abbey cloisters. Not your average church bazaar..... I hope my stall with greetings cards and mini art exhibition did not let the side down and that my name is working its way round Austria on the back of a few Christmas cards even as I type.
